최근에 Talisker 위스키를 맛 볼 기회가 있었다.
탈리스커는 글렌피딕, 글렌모렌지, 맥칼란등과 비교했을때 한수 위의 위스키 일 것이다.
바로 이 분 이시다.
탈리스커 위스키는 싱글 몰트다.
명주 반열에 드는 탈리스커에 대한 설명은 아래와 같다.

Talisker  is an Island Single Malt Scotch whisky produced by the Talisker Distillery, Carbost, Scotland; the only distillery on the Isle of Skye. The distillery is operated by United Distillers and Vintners for Diageo, and is marketed as part of their Classic Malts series.

Character

Talisker is known for its above average peat content, and "salty" (or "spicy") character. While the brand is generally well-accepted and sells well, the high phenol level and distinct taste may prove "challenging" for the casual whisky drinker. The distiller began producing special bottlings of the whisky for connoiseurs in the early 2000s, with a 20 and 25 year bottling (where previously only a 10 year and 18 year were available). The 25-year bottling was, despite being more expensive than the 20-year bottling, distributed more widely. Both have proved to be relatively popular.

The malt used is peated to a phenol level of approximately 25 parts per million (ppm), which is quite high.[citation needed] Additionally, the water used for production, from Cnoc nan Speireag, flows over peat which adds additional peatiness to the whisky.

Both Johnnie Walker and Drambuie (a liqueur, not a whisky) use Talisker as a component of their blended drinks; its presence is most notable in Walker's Green Label 15 Year Old Pure Malt.

History
The distillery was built in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, and expanded in 1900. During this early period, the whisky was produced using a triple distilling method, but changed to the more conventional double distilling in 1928. The distillery was nearly destroyed by fire in 1960, however five exact replicas of the original stills were constructed to preserve the original Talisker flavour.

Talisker was a favourite whisky of writers Robert Louis Stevenson & Henry Vollam Morton, and contemporary bassist Christopher Sadlers.[citation needed]

The distillery operates five stills, two wash stills and three spirit stills. All the stills use worm tubs (condensing coils) rather than a modern condenser, which are believed to give the whisky a "fuller" flavour (itself an indication of higher sugar content).

탈리스커는 입에 대는 순간 부드럽고, 뒷맛이 은은하다.
그래서 일반 위스키 스트레이트 잔에 마시지 않고, 부르고뉴 와인잔에 마신다.
위스키를 와인잔에 마셔야 할 만큼 그 향이 좋다는 말이다.
일반 위스키잔과 와인잔에 각각 담은 탈리스커를 비교해 보면, 천양지차다.

보르도 와인을 부르고뉴잔에 마실 수 없고, 부르고뉴 와인을 보르도 잔에 마실 수 없듯이,
탈리스커는 일반 술잔에 마시면 안된다는 말이 맞다는 생각이 든다.
탈리스커를 마시게 된다면, 반드시 부르고뉴 와인잔을 준비하길 바란다.

탈리스커는 스트레이트로 한번에 원샷 하는 위스키가 아니다.
입에 담고 한참동안 맛과 향을 음미하는 위스키다.
이 술로 폭탄주를 제조하는 사람은 3대에 걸쳐서 저주를 받을 것이다.

탈리스커가 생산되는 스코틀란드 스카이 섬은 '게르語'를 사용하고 있다고 한다.
지금도 도로표지판이 게르어와 영어가 병기된다는거다.
게르語를 쓴다니, 갑자기 게드전기의 한 지역이 아닌가 하는 묘한 생각도 든다.

탈리스커는 이 공장에서 생산된다고 한다.

위스키 잘 마시기로 유명한 마이클잭슨이 탈리스커 10년산을 마시고, 무려 90점이나 주었다고 한다.
중국술로 따지자면 오량액이나 귀주급의 명주라고 할 수 있다.

탈리스커를 마시고 난 느낌이 참 묘한데...
위스키를 마시고 이런 뒷맛과 느낌을 느낀것은 처음이기 때문이다.

마치 영국 해변의 목초지에서 바다를 바라보고 있는 느낌이었다.
술을 마신 후의 느낌이 딱 아래 사진과 같았다.
18년산 탈리스커는 이런 안주들과 함께 먹었다.
무라카미 하루키의 위스키 성지여행에 보면
굴에 에일레이 위스키를 끼얹어서 한입에 먹으면 환상의 맛이라고 했다.
굴의 비릿한 갯내음과 에일레이 위스키의 바다안개같은 아련한 맛이 어우러져서 말로 표현할 수 없는 맛이 된다는것이다.
이 맛을 보기위해서라도 스코틀란드에 갈 일을 만들어야 하겠다.

탈리스커와 같은 신선의 음식을 맛보게 해 주신 분에게 百生의 福이 있기를 기원한다.
